Free Image to Image AI
Image-to-image does not edit your picture. It starts from your picture, adds noise to it, and resolves a new one out of that noise. How much noise it adds is the single dial that decides whether you get a retouch or a different photograph.
The dial
Denoise strength, and why nothing else matters as much
It appears under several names — strength, denoise, image weight, how much to change — and sometimes as an unlabelled slider. It is the same control.
Your image, tidied
Composition, pose and identity survive. Useful for cleaning up, small texture changes and colour work. Push the prompt hard here and it will mostly be ignored, because there is not enough freedom left to act on it.
A negotiation
The interesting and unstable range. Layout tends to survive while detail is reinvented, which is where style transfer lives. It is also where results vary most between runs.
A new picture that rhymes
Only rough composition and colour distribution carry over. At the top of the range your source is barely more than a suggestion, and you are effectively generating from the prompt alone.

Four ways to hold something still
Strength is a blunt instrument: it trades away everything at once. These let you give up some things and keep others.
Change part of it
Inpainting confines the transform to a region you paint. The rest of the image is untouched rather than merely similar, which is a different guarantee entirely.
Keep the shapes
Conditioning on edges, depth or pose lets the model redraw everything while holding the layout. This is how a photograph becomes an illustration of the same scene.
Repeat yourself
A fixed seed makes a run reproducible, so you can change one setting and see only that change. Without it you are comparing two things at once and cannot tell which moved.
Let it settle
How many passes the model takes to resolve. Too few leaves artefacts; past a point more steps change very little and cost time or credits.
Terms
Words that mean the same thing
Strength, denoise, image weight
Usually the same dial, sometimes inverted — a high “image weight” often means the opposite of a high “strength”. Worth a single test run before trusting either.
Inpainting and outpainting
Inpainting changes a masked region inside the frame. Outpainting extends beyond the original edges. Same mechanism, different target area.
Img2img and style transfer
Style transfer is image-to-image run at a middling strength with a prompt describing a look. It is a use of the feature rather than a separate one.
Seed and batch
A seed fixes the starting randomness. A batch runs several seeds at once, which is the practical way to work given that any single result is a draw.
